World View Wednesday

December 12, 2007

This morning I spent an hour on the air with Nancy Turner on WMBI-FM in Chicago as part of their “World View Wednesday” broadcast. It turned out to be a unique and inspiring hour. Unique in that it wasn’t really an interview at all. We spent the hour praying with listeners about what’s going on in the news around the world. With Christmas music playing in the background, we prayed about the ice storm that has left so many without power in the Plains States and across the Midwest and we prayed about the mudslide in Oregon. Nancy invited listeners to call in their prayers–only these were not personal prayer requests. One person called and prayed that we might love not just the victims of crime but also those who commit the crimes, and a woman from Melrose Park became choked up as she talked about praying for our troops overseas. In the middle of the program we got an email from a missions prof at Moody with news about a doctor at a Christian hospital in Pakistan who has been kidnapped so we stopped and prayed for his safety. One caller after another brought up the needs of the world and we prayed together.

I don’t know how many interviews I’ve done over the years–over 900, I suppose–but never have I had an hour on the air like the one this morning. It’s a great idea, to pray over the news of the day and to invite listeners to join in the prayer time, and I was glad to be part of it.
