When God Wants You in Kansas City

WHEN GOD WANTS YOU IN KANSAS CITY by Ray Pritchard A couple of weeks ago Bob Weller sent me a note saying that he and Denise are moving to Kansas City very soon. I was surprised to hear the news and wondered what led them to make the move. Along with his e-mail, Bob sent an attachment he called “Coincidences.” It begins with a question: “How many coincidences do you need before you see the hand of God in your life?” I pause to note that this is not a theoretical question, along the lines of “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?” It’s intensely practical. We’ve all wondered at times how to “read” the circumstances of life as we attempt to discern God’s will in a major decision looming before us. For Bob and Denise it went something like this A few weeks ago a headhunter from California called Bob’s office on a cold call. He wasn’t looking for Bob and as Bob put it, “didn’t know me from Adam.” When the headhunter mentioned the job in Kansas City, Bob decided to fax his résumé. That was on Monday; by Friday he was in Kansas City for an interview. On Saturday morning at his regular men’s accountability Bible study, “we read about a family that moved to Kansas City to settle down and raise a family.” A few days later, the company in Kansas City made a very attractive offer. A few days later Bob was sharing with one of his employees who needs to make a big decision, but is afraid to make a move. “I told her that if she trusted God, he would take care of her and the details of her move.” There are other details, such as finding a position for Denise similar to the work she has done in Chicago, having relatives in Kansas City with whom they can stay, and this fact, not to be discounted: “Kansas City is one of the areas in the U.S. that we’ve always considered living in.” Then on a recent trip, Bob says they found “the perfect house” only ten minutes from where Bob will be working. And there are other ways in which God has taken care of things on this end so they would be free to move. Three months ago Bob and Denise had no idea they would be moving to Kansas City. Soon they will be there. Their story illustrates the truth that our Father works through the seemingly “chance” events of life, like someone from California calling and “happening” to find someone willing to move to Kansas City. “The steps of the godly are directed by the Lord. He delights in every detail of their lives.” (Psalm 37: 23 NLT). This verse has come true for Bob and Denise in ways they could never have imagined. When God wants you in Kansas City, he knows how to make it happen.
