Tuesday at Gull Lake

June 30, 2009

With Norberto Puente.

Greetings from Gull Lake at the end of a cloudy day. I don’t think the temp reached 65 today, quite a change from the scorching heat in Tupelo. Last night we slept with the windows open so the lake breeze would keep us cool.

We’re having a fine week. Gull Lake has make a total commitment to reaching families with children and teenagers. As a result there are lots of young families here and the kids are everywhere, including a large contingent of teenagers. Tonight Marlene and I ate dinner with two of the college students who serve as summer counselors. This week they are working with the High Tide (high school age) girls. When I asked about the daily Bible study, they said that it’s all about the gospel. Here is the outline:

Monday–Holiness of God
Tuesday–Depravity of Man
Wednesday–Cross of Christ
Thursday–God is the Gospel”

With Tom Albert.

That’s some pretty heavy theology to be laying down on the teenagers. But the students not only listen, they discuss the concepts. One on the counselors (her camp name is “Bumper Car.” We never did learn her real name) launched into an enthusiastic explanation of why each day is so important. “The students need to know these truths because this is what the gospel is all about.” And she added, “Teaching it this way helps me understand that it’s all about God from beginning to end.”

That’s a great emphasis, isn’t it? Our churches would be stronger if we had more biblical theology in our gospel preaching.

Meanwhile, I’ve been working my way through the life of Peter. This is the second time I’ve done the series, and I feel like I’m learning more about it this time around.

That’s the news from Gull Lake. Thanks for your prayers. We wrap up the teaching on Thursday morning.

PS I was very pleased on Sunday morning to meet two of my Facebook friends. Norberto Puente drove from Holland and Tom Albert (along with his wife and a friend) came from Lansing.
