Ticket to Ride

December 15, 2008

Here’s my first Christmas gift recommendation. Several weeks ago Mark and Vanessa gave Marlene an early Christmas gift, a board game called Ticket to Ride. It’s a cross-country train adventure where each player tries to build railway routes connecting various American cities. It’s a combination of strategy, timing and the luck of the draw as you try to collect train cards of various colors so you can put down the little colored train cars in order to build railway links between cities. It’s actually kind of cool to see a long train zigzagging its way from Vancouver to Phoenix or from Nashville to Sault Ste. Marie.

Tonight Marlene and I opened the box, set up the board, and played our first game. It quickly became very engrossing. She had routes stretching along both coasts while I snaked along the middle of the country.

The game involves 2-5 players and takes 30-60 minutes to play. There is a website with additional variations plus other versions set in Europe. I imagine we’ll play again tomorrow. If you’re looking for a fun board game for Christmas, check out Ticket to Ride
