Things I’ve Learned

September 27, 2000

This week my cousin Barbara sent me an e·mail containing a list of aphorisms called “Things I’ve Learned.” She got it from a friend in Florida who got it from somewhere else. I’ve taken a few from the list I received and I’ve added a few of my own. I’ve learned that

·You can do something in an instant that will give you a heartache for life.
·A soft answer really does turn away wrath.
·You should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.
·You can keep going long after you think you can’t.
·When I can’t help in any other way, I can always say a prayer.
·If you sincerely ask God for a grateful heart, He will always answer that prayer.
·God will never give us more than we can bear, but sometimes He comes pretty close to the line.
·We are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.
·Romance is good, love is better, and commitment is best of all.
·If I want the faith of a child, I need to spend time playing with children.
·Money is a lousy way of keeping score.
·You can tell a lot about a man by the way he handles disappointment.
·I don’t have all the answers, and that’s okay because God does.
·Either you control your attitude or it controls you.
·It’s a good thing that God doesn’t answer all my prayers.
·Being angry doesn’t give me the right to be cruel.
·A good book is a gift from God.
·I have a better day if I start by doing the thing I least want to do.
·No matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.
·If I put God first, He will take care of the details of life.
·No matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief.
·Miracles are everywhere if only we have eyes to see them.
·Real change is hard work.
·Life isn’t fair and the sooner we learn that, the happier we’ll be.
·Credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.
·The people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.
·The key to happiness is to find and do the will of God.
·Heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.
·God is good all the time, even when all the evidence points in the other direction.

Every day above ground is a winner.
