The Whole Bible in 90 Hours!

December 26, 1999

In case you haven’t heard, the Bible Reading Marathon begins this Tuesday at 6:00 a.m. For the last 90 hours of this millennium, hundreds of people will take turns reading the entire Bible from the pulpit in our sanctuary, starting in Genesis and continuing until we reach the end of the book of Revelation. You are welcome to come and go as often as you like. You can come at 7:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m., 10:45 p.m., 1:45 a.m. or 4:00 a.m. It doesn’t matter when you come. The reading will continue and the sanctuary will be open around the clock.

Here are a few guidelines you need to know about:

1.For security reasons the only entrance to the sanctuary will be the entrance from the west parking lot. All other doors will be locked.
2.Please come to listen and to pray quietly.
3.No food or drink in the sanctuary.
4.No sleeping in the sanctuary.
5.There will be no nursery or childcare.

A Bible Reading Marathon means that the whole Bible will be read from beginning to end in a continuous fashion. No chapters or verses will be skipped. We will not stop for music, public prayer, explanations, exhortations, applications, or any other comments. Those who come to the marathon will have the rare privilege of listening as whole books of the Bible are read in consecutive fashion.

The marathon goes on regardless of the weather. We will do whatever it takes to keep the west parking lot clear. For your safety we will have volunteer security personnel on-duty around the clock. We will also receiv assistance from the Oak Park Police Department.

If you would like to know who is reading at a particular time or when a particular part of the Bible is being read, we have posted the entire schedule on our website on the Internet. You can find it at http://www.cmcop.org.

We will be broadcasting the entire 90 hours of Bible reading on our website. That includes both audio and video. Anyone with a computer and a modem anywhere in the world can watch and listen in real time as the Bible is being read.

The entire congregation is invited to come to the sanctuary for the final two hours of the marathon: 10:00 p.m.-12 midnight on Friday, December 31. At 11:45 p.m. we’ll all stand and read in unison the final two chapters of the Bible – Revelation 21-22. When we are finished the choir will sing the “Hallelujah Chorus” followed by a brief praise service. Then we will adjourn to the Dining Room for a party.

It all begins this Tuesday at 6:00 a.m. in the sanctuary. I hope to see all of you sometime during the 90 hours as we wrap up this millennium by reading through the entire Bible.
