The Day of Accounting
September 13, 2012
A friend who serves in leadership at his church called to talk about some big decisions the leadership team is facing. The details don’t matter except to note that the decisions will have a big impact on my friend and his family and on the church he serves.
Several times during the conversation (at least four times, I think) he mentioned the “Day of Accounting.”
“Someday I will stand before the Lord on the Day of Accounting. I want to be able to say that I was faithful to the Lord and to his Word when that day comes.”
I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone talk about it that way.
His words reminded me of Hebrews 13:17, ”Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account.”
A “Day of Accounting” will eventually come for all of us, but local church leaders bear a heavier responsibility. They must answer for those committed to their care.
After I hung up the phone, I couldn’t get that phrase out my mind. The thought occurred that we would have stronger churches if leaders took more seriously the coming “Day of Accounting.”
