Jesus begins by referring to Himself as the ultimate source of sustenance. He has just fed the 5,000 and his reference to bread echoes back to the manna given to God’s people in the wilderness. Jesus wants to lift his listeners from a barren, food-dominated existence to the understanding that He alone can satisfy the supreme hunger of life.
