Speaking of the Waffle House

June 28, 2006

Peter Faulkner tells me that the Waffle House has the best chili anywhere. I don’t doubt it, but we’re eating breakfast with Mark, not lunch. By the way, did you know that since 1955, the Waffle House restaurants have served ….
495,264,367 Waffles
957,041,599 Cups of Coffee
11,527,602,959.24 Eggs
22,217,455 Slices of Pie
123,587,123 T-bone Steaks
479,312,699 Glasses of Coke
1,108,574,633 Orders of Grits
72,567,509 Cheese n’ Eggs
204,164,660 Omelets
That’s over 1 billion orders of grits. By the way, if you stacked all the sausage patties they serve in one day, it would reach higher than the Empire State Building. I found this out on the Fun Facts page of the Waffle House website.
The following email put me in a good mood this morning:

Dr. Ray,
It was wonderful to read about the great taste your son and wife have in restaurants. We like to think we are some of the “nice restaurants” in Birmingham.
We get many letters and emails from folks like your son, who after traveling for a while want to visit us when they get back. We are flattered our restaurants remind people about home and they miss us when they are away. We’ve received some emails from soldiers in Iraq saying they miss us, and we try to send over waffle mix and other goodies for them.
I know you will have a great time with your family, and I hope your visit “Under The Yellow Sign” is also enjoyable.
Please give my regards to your family.

The Internet is amazing, isn’t it? Pat, thanks for writing. I want you to know that my son and my wife are smiling because you wrote back. They always knew Waffle House is a great place to eat. I am smiling also. We got a note from Mark saying that he had arrived in Los Angeles last night after a year in China. So he’s back in the USA, and tomorrow morning we’ll get to see him, and we’re going to celebrate at the Waffle House. I promise to write a further report after our celebration.
