On Our Way to Gull Lake

June 27, 2009

The Gull Lake staff builds a pyramid.

This morning Marlene and I are on our way to Michigan for a week at Gull Lake Ministries. As the name implies, the conference lies on the shore of a body of water that National Geographic called one of the premier inland lakes in the nation. Starting in 1897 Christians met on this beautiful spot for summer camp. In 1920 it became an interdenominational Bible conference, featuring a series of noted Bible teachers from all across the country.

I first spoke there eight or nine years ago as part of Moody Week. Since then I’ve returned several times as the Bible teacher for one of their family camps. When we lived in Oak Park, I would bring my bike with me and ride during the afternoons.

If you’re looking for Gull Lake, it’s located between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, about an hour south of Grand Rapids. To get there we’re flying from Tupelo to Memphis to Minneapolis to Grand Rapids where someone will meet us.

Each conference center has its own unique flavor. Besides the striking beauty of the lakeside setting, I have watched Gull Lake make a very successful transtion to a family-centered ministry. While some conference centers cater to an older demographic, at Gull Lake they’ve committed themselves to getting younger, and they’ve done it. Many families spend their vacation here because they do such a good job of ministering to children and teens.

We’re happy to be returning for another visit. If you live in the area, you are welcome to attend any of the services. You can find the daily schedule on the Gull Lake website.
