My Elvis Presley T-Shirt

September 29, 2009

When I arrived home last night, Marlene said, “I’ve got something for you.” It turned out to be a very nice birthday present that she put together while I was in Canada. She found a card with a picture of Indiana Jones on the front that read, “When they ask how old you are, take some advice from Dr. Jones.” When you open it, the card plays the theme from “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” And the text reads, “It’s not the years . . . it’s the mileage. . . . Here’s to being well traveled. Happy Birthday.” Marlene added, “And you have plenty of mileage!” and “I love you.” I loved the card and played the music over and over because it made me smile.

Then she gave me several shirts, some dress socks (which I badly needed), and a new shirt and tie for the Friendship Banquet on Thursday night.

She surprised me with a t-shirt from the Elvis Presley Birthplace in Tupelo. Everywhere I go people know that Elvis was born in Tupelo. And if they don’t know, I tell them. Sometimes I’ll ask an audience what world famous entertainer was born in Tupelo. When they say, “Elvis Presley,” I’ll answer back, “Thank you. Thank you very much,” which usually draws a laugh.

Anyway, I’m very happy with my sweetheart and I love all my birthday gifts, but I especially like my bright green Elvis t-shirt.
