Marty Haggard

September 3, 2006

When I sent out my weekly sermon email a few days ago, I commented that Pastor Wes Sherman had told me that the highlight of the week would be a concert by Marty Haggard, son of country music legend Merle Haggard. Turns out he was right. This morning we had at least 125 people, which meant there were chairs in the aisles to seat the latecomers. For years the church has had Homecoming Revival on Labor Day Weekend so family and friends and former members always come back on this Sunday. After I preached at 10 AM, Marty Haggard gave an hour-long concert. Suffice it to say that he has his father’s voice and a wonderful musical gift. If you like Merle, you’ll like Marty also. But here’s the surprise. Quite a few singers (of all varieties) are good performers who don’t have much to say. Marty had a ton to say. His comments were packed with good theology. I think some people probably wanted to hear dramatic stories, but he mostly shared insights from the Word (along with songs he has written). I thoroughly enjoyed hearing him.
