KBM and the China Earthquake

May 26, 2008

Two weeks ago a devastating earthquake struck the Sichuan province in China. At first the death toll was estimated to be 32,000. As of this writing, the number has climbed to 65,000. The final figure will be far larger. Over 300,000 were injured. Tens of thousands are missing with over 5 million left homeless. Yesterday a strong aftershock destroyed over 70,000 homes with 200,000 more on the verge of collapse. As a result of the earthquake and aftershocks, hundreds of dams have been damaged, including 69 that may collapse.

Last week we sent $3000 to help with the initial expenses of the relief team.
We also wired $10,000 to reprint An Anchor for the Soul in Chinese.

At this moment Peter is somewhere in the earthquake region, surveying the damage and assessing the best way to offer help. We expect to hear from him in a few days after he returns home. There is much more to this story than I can share right now. We want you to know that we are working with Peter and his congregation to help those who live in the earthquake zone. Because of the magnitude of this disaster, rebuilding and spiritual restoration will be long-term projects. We are glad to join hearts and hands with Peter in offering help to our friends in China. Please pray with us for Peter’s safety as he travels, and for God to open the door for us to offer help in Jesus’ name.

We will keep you updated as we hear more news from Peter in China.
