“Heal My Faith, Lord”

July 7, 2009

A few days ago a friend told me about a Bible teacher in the 1800s who had an unusual way of dealing with people who came to him with various spiritual problems. After listening to them, he would pray for their faith to be healed.

“Lord, Margaret is struggling right now with many questions and many doubts. She feels overwhelmed by all that she is going through. Heal her faith, Lord. Repair that which has been broken by these painful circumstances. Restore her faith so that she can trust in you and know the joy of the Lord again.”

The idea of praying for the “healing” of one’s faith strikes me as entirely biblical. Faith is not an immovable object, like a giant brick wall. Faith may be strong or weak, it ebbs and flows, it grows or shrinks, it flourishes or it fades away. And since true faith is a gift of God (Ephesians 2:8-9), we have every right to ask our Heavenly Father to heal our faith and make it strong once again.

So I commend this prayer to you. Pray this for others. And when you feel weak, pray it for yourself.

“Heal my faith, Lord.”
