He Thought He Was Doomed

October 9, 2024
During my “Stealth Attack” class last night, I read a letter from a prisoner who is serving a life sentence for a murder he committed in Georgia. He has been in prison since 2005.
But somehow he found a copy of An Anchor for the Soul and began to read it. Let me share the rest of the story in his own words:
“Your book gave me new hope! The simplicity of your writing made God’s love clearer to me. Also, it made the fact of believing and trusting in Jesus a real thing to me.
Just to let you know, you have inspired an individual who thought he was doomed because of how he’s lived.
For that I am extremely grateful, and I wish the best for you and your family.
Stay strong and God bless!”
He then wrote “In Christ,” and signed his name.
Here’s a man who is twenty years into a life sentence. He will probably never get out of prison. No wonder he felt doomed because of what he did in Georgia.
When I shared this letter last night, I quoted these famous lines from “O For a Thousand Tongues”:
He breaks the power of cancelled sin,
he sets the prisoner free;
his blood can make the foulest clean;
his blood availed for me.
That’s the good news of the gospel. That’s why we preach it and teach it and share it wherever we go. You’ve never met a sinner who is beyond the reach of God’s grace.
Not even a murderer.
I have no idea how he got a copy of Anchor because we work with many different prison ministries. There are always many links in the chain of salvation, but behind it all stands the Lord. I’m glad the gospel of Jesus is still the power of God to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16).
Remember to pray for the prisoners (Hebrews 13:3). God is at work behind prison bars.
Wouldld you join me in praying for this brother and for many other prisoners who are reading An Anchor for the Soul?
Your generosity makes it possible for us give away thousands of Anchors every year to men and women who need Jesus.
Thanks for your love, your prayers, and your support.
