“Lord, lead me to the ones I need, and to the ones who need me.” Amy Grant

"I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold; I’d rather be His than have riches untold; I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands; I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand Than to be the king of a vast domain Or be held in sin’s dread sway; I’d rather have Jesus than anything This world affords today." Rhea F Miller, 1922

"The wealth of the wicked means nothing. They have nothing. Without God, without forgiveness, without heaven, they have nothing. With God we have everything and always have everything, no matter the outward circumstances of our lives." Robert Rayburn

“When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you” (Psalm 73: 21-22). True repentance looks like this. It recognizes the sin, calls it by name, goes to the root of the matter, and admits the truth. One version says, “I was totally ignorant, a dumb ox in your very presence.” That’s telling it like it is.

When we are troubled by the events around us, we should ask ourselves, “Do I still believe in God?” Do we have a God so big that he transcends the shattering affairs of this world? Do we have a God who doesn’t have to watch Fox News to find out what’s going on in the Middle East? Perhaps we should keep Isaiah 6 in mind. That magnificent passage begins with the words “In the year that King Uzziah died.” That note is important because Uzziah was one of the best kings Judah ever had. When he died, the nation was plunged into turmoil. A golden age in Israel’s history was drawing to a close. Would the people continue to walk with God or would they return to idolatry? In that fateful moment, Isaiah came face to face with the living God. He says it this way: “I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple” (Isaiah 6:1). Where is God? He’s not nervously pacing heaven wondering, “Who will I get to replace Uzziah?” Not at all. At that critical moment, God is where he has always been. Seated on his throne. That same is true today. The Lord of the universe is not worried about anything. He's got the whole world in his hands. Keep that in mind as we go through the next few months between now and Election Day.

https://youtu.be/MqtG-XfxMC4 Robertson McQuilkin died yesterday at the age of 88. For many years he served as president of Columbia International University (formerly Columbia Bible College and Seminary) in South Carolina. In 1990 he made headlines throughout the Christian world when he stepped down from his presidency to care for his wife Muriel who suffered from Alzheimer's and needed his full-time care. She died 13 years later, in 2003. This brief video comes from the announcement he made in 1990 when he stepped down from his position to care for his wife. Here is one excerpt: "It's not only that I promised in sickness and in health, 'till death do us part, and I'm a man of my word. But . . . it's the only fair thing. She sacrificed for me for forty years, to make my life possible . . . so if I cared for her for forty years, I would still be in debt. However, there's much more. It's not that I have to. It's that I get to. I love her very dearly, and you can tell it's not easy to talk about. She's a delight. It's a great honor to care for such a wonderful person." In his long life, Robertson McQuilkin wrote many books (including the very beautiful A Promise Kept about his life with Muriel), served as a missionary in Japan, had great influence at the school where he served as president, and gave many powerful sermons. But he never did more than when he laid down his career to take care of his wife. He called it the easiest decision he ever made. Though there were many challenges, he never regretted the choice he made. A godly man and a faithful husband has gone to heaven. His legacy will last for many generations.

Obedience always comes first. Jesus doesn’t tell us in advance what he will do. Will we obey him anyway?

All truth is narrow. If something is true, then many other things must not be true. If everything is true, then nothing is true. If truth depends on your opinion or on the latest Gallup poll, we can never know the truth about anything. That is why Christians insist on the concept of absolute truth. Without it, we have no faith to believe, only some warm, fuzzy sentimental feelings in our heart. That is not enough. We need to reassert once again to this crazy, mixed-up, confused generation exactly what the Psalmist said regarding God, “All your words are true" (Psalm 119:60).

The real problem of America today is not the political battle between Democrat and Republicans.  Our true problems are moral, ethical and spiritual. Francis Schaeffer summed up the condition of modern man when he said, “Modern man has his feet firmly planted in mid air.”  As a culture, as a nation, as a society, we are dying. We are on life support. We are being kept artificially alive. We are dying and we don’t know why. Jesus said, "I have come that they might have life" (John 10:10). Let's ask God to send a great awakening to our nation. Our hope is not in politics. Our hope is in the Lord.

In 1916 Charles Tindley wrote a wonderful gospel song called "Take Your Burden to the Lord and Leave It There." You would be hard-pressed to any advice more needed today. We all struggle, but we don't all struggle in the same way. I thought you would be inspired by reading the words of this gospel song written a century ago. I have included a video of Joey+Rory singing this song. May the Lord use these words to give strength to your heart today. If the world from you withhold of its silver and its gold, And you have to get along with meager fare, Just remember, in His Word, how He feeds the little bird— Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there. Refrain: Leave it there, leave it there, Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there; If you trust and never doubt, He will surely bring you out— Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there. If your body suffers pain and your health you can’t regain, And your soul is almost sinking in despair, Jesus knows the pain you feel, He can save and He can heal— Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there When your enemies assail and your heart begins to fail, Don’t forget that God in Heaven answers prayer; He will make a way for you and will lead you safely through— Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there. When your youthful days are gone and old age is stealing on, And your body bends beneath the weight of care; He will never leave you then, He’ll go with you to the end— Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.

"The work of a Beethoven, and the work of a charwoman, become spiritual on precisely the same condition, that of being offered to God, of being done humbly 'as to the Lord'. This does not, of course, mean that it is for anyone a mere toss-up whether he should sweep rooms or compose symphonies. A mole must dig to the glory of God and a cock must crow." C. S. Lewis

It is very easy for us to become complacent in the midst of the blessings of God. We secretly begin to think: Everything's OK now; I've got life all wired up. My marriage is good, and my kids are good, and my job is good, and life is good, and I love my church. Everything in my life is exactly where I want it to be.   If that happens to be your situation at this moment, don't feel bad about that. If your life is like that, you ought to enjoy it, and you ought to be profoundly grateful to God. But know these two things for certain:   1. You don't deserve these blessings. 2. They won't last forever.   The seasons of life always change. Enjoy the good times, but do not take them for granted.

"In an era that prizes individual freedom, Christians believe in a supreme being who dictates our words and deeds. To modern ears, the concept sounds outrageously autocratic. From when to die to when to give birth, from whom to have sex with, to how to spend their money, the chatteratis believe they should enjoy unlimited freedom. But for the Christian, freedom is not an end in itself. Unfettered individualism can mean greed and selfishness, the evasion of personal responsibility, the destruction of the family. Christians believe that from an all-powerful authority stems a clear system of judgment which teaches that there is a right and a wrong." Cristina Odone

You will know you are converted when you come to Jesus and something happens to you that you cannot fully explain. True conversion is more than walking an aisle, saying a prayer, or raising a hand. True conversion means that Almighty God enters your life, in the deepest, most personal part, and takes up residence within. You can truly say, “I am converted,” when you know that God has done something for you that only God can do.

Good Lord, save me from myself today. Deliver me from rudeness, irritability, sarcasm, quick put-downs, and remind me not to roll my eyes or sigh or mutter under my breath. In short, Lord, do a miracle in me today because I need one. Amen.

"Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt, Yonder on Calvary's mount outpoured, There where the blood of the Lamb was spilt. Grace, grace, God's grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God's grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin." Julia Johnston, 1910

“Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed” (Romans 4:18). This is always where faith meets the acid test. Are you willing to believe God even when the outward circumstances argue against it? Abraham had no one to encourage him. No one except God. Where is God stretching your faith right now? Where would be it easier for you to doubt God than to believe him? As you think about those questions, ponder the story of Abraham and Sarah. God put it in the Bible for at least two reasons: 1. So that we will know that God always keeps his promises. 2. So that we will never stop believing even though we have to wait a long time for God to answer our prayers. Keep hope alive. You never know what God will do.

“Be patient with everyone” (1 Thessalonians 5:14). The word means to be long-tempered. It has the idea of being tough and durable under pressure. Be slow to anger, slow to give up. Don’t lose your patience as you help others. We must not give way to exasperation. Sometimes I hear people say, “I lost my temper.” I want to reply, “You didn’t lose it, you found it!” Some of us need to lose our temper and never find it again.

“Is your faith strong?” a Christian man was asked a few hours before his death. “No, but my Jesus is.” It does not matter whether your faith is strong or weak today. Your faith will rise and fall according to the varying seasons and tides of life. But do not worry if your faith does not seem strong. We have a great Savior. Rest on him and all will be well.

“The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day" (Proverbs 4:18). Here is a parable for the Christian life. In the beginning there is light enough for each step we take. As we walk with the Lord, the light grows brighter and brighter until the light shines so brightly that we simply walk from earth to heaven. I sometimes wonder if believers even realize they have died. I think (though I can’t prove this) that death for the Christian is only an earthly event, that we simply pass through the portal into the light of God’s presence and we don’t even realize what happened until we are standing in the presence of the Lord. Here is the joy and paradox of the Christian view of death: When we die, we will be more alive than we've ever been because we are finally and forever with the Lord.

Idolatry lies in the worshiper, not in the thing worshiped. A golden calf is not an idol by itself. Left to itself, a golden calf is just a golden calf. It becomes an idol only when we begin to worship it. It is a wrong attitude that turns something good into something bad. Don’t blame your car if you aren’t happy. It’s your fault that you trust in your car to give you satisfaction. Don’t blame your boy friend if you aren’t happy. It’s your fault that you look to him to make you happy. Don’t blame your spouse if you aren’t happy. No husband or wife can make you happy all the time. Don’t blame your boss if you aren’t happy. He’s not responsible for your happiness. Don’t blame your children if you aren’t happy. God never meant for you to look to them as the source of your happiness. Don’t blame your new house if you aren’t happy. No house can provide ultimate happiness. Don’t blame your church if you aren’t happy. No church can make you happy. Happiness comes from a living relationship with Jesus Christ. He alone can satisfy the deepest needs of your life. Looking anywhere else for ultimate happiness is really just a sophisticated form of idolatry.

"For the Lord himself will come down from heaven" (1 Thessalonians 4:16). When you get up in the morning say, “Lord Jesus, I hope you come today. Please help me to do your will so I will be ready to meet you when you come.” Daily obedience is the key. Keep your eyes on the skies. Keep your bags packed and ready to go. Do God’s will in all things. Serve the Lord every day. Live for Jesus and you will never be disappointed no matter when he comes.

"The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom" (Isaiah 40:28). God isn’t worried about anything. He’s not up in heaven wringing his hands over who's going to win the election in November. He’s also not fretting about your next visit to the doctor. He’s not worried about your aging parents or your income taxes or whether or not you’re ever going to get married. God’s not worried about anything in your life or my life or about anything relating to the people we love. He’s up in heaven in perfect control of the entire universe at all times. He’s working out his plan to perfection and nothing can hinder him in the least degree.

"Lead me to some soul today, O teach me, Lord, just what to say; Friends of mine are lost in sin, And cannot find their way. Few there are who seem to care, And few there are who pray; Melt my heart, and fill my life, Give me one soul today." Will Houghton, 1936

If my love for Jesus never leads me to take a risk, how much do I really love him? If my faith never causes me to do things that make no sense to others, including my Christian friends, perhaps I’m playing it too safe. If everything I say and do seems perfectly comprehensible to the world, then I need to do some soul-searching.

Never be ashamed to ask for God's mercy. If you deserved it, you wouldn't need it. That's why we are saved "according to his mercy" (Titus 3:5). It's also why his mercies are "new every morning" (Lamentations 3:23). His mercy is greater than your sin. He's ready to clean up the mess you made in the last 24 hours. Lay hold of God's mercy. There's plenty to go around. A fresh supply just arrived from heaven this morning.

"His faithfulness remains from generation to generation" (Psalm 100:5). Often parents wonder how their children and grandchildren will turn out. This verse gives us hope for the future. When our time comes to leave this world, we can depart with confidence because we serve a trans-generational God. We come and go, but God's faithfulness continues. That means we can trust him with the generations yet to come. Here is great hope for parents who worry about what will happen when they are gone. The God who cares for us will take care of our children--and our grandchildren too!
