Four Dogs In Our Living Room

October 12, 2007

Lu, Parker, Dudley, Gary

This morning when I got up to let Gary and Dudley go outside, I kept hearing a dog whining from somewhere in the house. It turns out that Nick and Brad brought along their five-month-old basset hound named Lu, which is short for Lu Bu, a Chinese warlord from the 2nd century AD who, according to this Wikipedia article, was “a master in horseback riding, archery, and armed combat, and was thus known as the Flying General.” For a while Gary and Dudley and Lu played with each other and then they settled down.

Things changed when Mark arrived with Parker, the little Maltese that he and Vanessa brought with them from California. Immediately Parker and Lu got into it, and even though Lu is about five times bigger, Parker backed him right down, barking in his face and chasing him around the dining room table. He was like a little white furball chasing the much bigger basset hound.

I managed to get all four dogs in the picture purely by luck. Lu and Dudley are “jawing” at each other while Parker peeks out from underneath them. In the foreground Gary is watching Mark who is just out of the picture.

In our house size doesn’t matter. Gary is the largest, Dudley and Lu love to play, but Parker rules them all. He doesn’t take any guff from those bigger dogs.
