Father Mychal’s Prayer

February 1, 2007

This morning President Bush spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington. You can read the text of his remarks here. During his brief comments, the president mentioned Father Mychal Judge, a chaplain with the New York Fire Department who lost his life when the World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11. Father Mychal had helped a young woman named Shannon Hickey in her battle with liver cancer. To honor him, Shannon established Mychal’s Message, a non-profit organization that has collected and distributed over 100,000 items to the poor and homeless. With each gift, she encloses a card with Father Mychal’s personal prayer:

Lord, take me where you want me to go, let me meet who you want me to meet, tell me what you want me to say, and keep me out of your way.

I love that prayer–especially the last phrase–because it is simple, clear and down-to-earth. Why not take a moment a pray this prayer right now?
