What About Free Grace and Lordship Salvation?

March 9, 2009

This refers to a debate that spread across the evangelical world about 20 years ago and continues to this day regarding what consitutes true saving faith. It’s an attempt to answer, “What must I believe or how much must I believe or what does believing mean and how is it related to a changed life?” Everyone agrees that we are saved by faith, by simply trusting Christ as Savior and Lord. However we disagree on what “simply” implies. Is it “merely” believing facts to be true? I would say that is part of it, but believing must lead on to trust and confidence and leaning up. To trust Christ means to understand my own need for a Savior and then to cling to Christ and Christ alone for my salvation. That sort of belief always leads to a changed life, but the extent of that change and how quickly it will be seen varies from person to person. That’s a lot of what the debate is about. I have always thought that saving faith means entrusting all that I am to all that Christ is. I say that with the understanding that faith itself is a gift from God and that I can only come “just as I am,” trusting in Christ to save me. See What is Saving Faith?
