China Bans Bible for Olympic Athletes

November 6, 2007

Evidently the organizers of the Summer Olympics in Beijing are afraid of the Bible because they have put it on the list of prohibited items for Olympic athletes coming from other countries. Here are several articles:

In addition, visitors to China are being warned not to bring more than one copy of the Bible with them to the games next August. This appears to contradict earlier promises to allow religious services (and some degree of religious freedom) during the Olympics. Recent reports highlight increased pressure on Christians in China.

I predict banning the Bible for Olympic athletes will boomerang and prove to be a PR nightmare for China and will in fact highlight the amazing growth of the Christian church in China in recent years.

UPDATE: China denies banning Bibles for Olympic athletes. Kudos to Senator Lindsey Graham and others who spoke out against the ban.
