Created From Dust

post date: February 2, 2011
In Genesis 2:7, we see that God created man from dust and breathed life into him. The imagery shown by being created from dust illustrates to us man’s inherent weakness. Then right after being created from dust we’re told that God breathed into man the breath of life. With that breath man was given the unique dignity of bearing the image of God. We aren’t given an account of how animals were created which indicates man’s unique position as “king of creation,” the one created to rule over the earth.

While we can’t know for sure the specifics of how the animals were made, there is a clue within the creation story in Genesis 1 we should look at when talking about creation. Over and over within the story we see the phrase “Then God Said” repeated over and over followed immediately creation.

God said “let there be light” and there was. (Gen 1:3)

God said “let the earth sprout vegetation” and it did. (Gen 1:1)

God said “let the earth bring forth living creatures” and it did. (Gen 1:24)

The story is not specific to how each thing was created, just that it was created and ordered by God. That’s really the focus of this story, that God created all things.
