“And Now I Say Farewell”

January 31, 2009

Kay Yow, coach of the North Carolina State University women’s basketball team, died last Saturday after a long battle with recurring breast cancer. During her coaching career she won over 700 games, including leading the U.S. women to an Olympic gold medal in the 1988 Summer Games. In 2000 she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

At her funeral yesterday in Cary, North Carolina, she gave  a 25-minute taped farewell message to the large crowd in attendance.  You can read the story about the service. Here is part of what she said:

And now I say farewell. And it’s been a wonderful journey, especially since the time I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior.

I don’t want you to fret over the fact that I’m not here or question why I’m not here because God knows what he’s doing. He doesn’t make mistakes. … I have now a place in heaven with him.
