Good Words for Today: April 28
What happens when we worship? When William Temple tried to define worship, he wrote a statement that is both beautiful and profound:
To worship is to quicken the conscience by the holiness of God,
To feed the mind with the truth of God,
To purge the imagination by the beauty of God,
To open the heart to the love of God,
To devote the will to the purpose of God.
All of that is utterly countercultural. You don’t get that by spending hours on social media. Come to think of it, you won’t get that in the great universities of the world. Cambridge and Harvard can teach you how to think at a high level, but if you want to worship, you’ll need to go into the presence of God.
