China’s Communists Get Religion
March 9, 2009
George Thomas of CBN News says that China’s Communists have changed their attitude toward religion. After decades of persecution and official opposition, China’s leaders have started to see the value of Christianity in promoting stability and harmony in society. At the recent National Congress in Beijing, President Hu Jintao added the word “religion” to the Community Party constitution. This represents a recognition of the growing influence of Chinese Christians in every level of society.
Unofficial surveys put the number of Christians in China at 130,000,000. In a related story, Chinese officials recently held secret meetings with leaders of the house church movement. Here’s a quote from the article:
In recent years the number of Christians has soared. Officials privately estimate the total at 130 million — far outstripping the 74 million members of the Communist Party. Most are Protestants and are affiliated with unofficial house churches.
