And Can It Be

November 27, 2008

Several years ago when I made a list of My ten Favorite Hymns, I ended up putting “And Can It Be” in the top spot. This great hymn by Charles Wesley was largely unknown in the U.S. until the Billy Graham crusade at Harringay Arena in London in 1954. Later the Graham team used the hymn in many American crusades and made it famous.

This particular version, recorded in Wesley’s Chapel in London, comes from the BBC program “Songs of Praise.” Has there ever been a greater hymn written that explains how sinners are awakened to God’s grace?

On this happy Thanksgiving Day, sing along and let your heart rejoice in what Christ has done for us.
