How Does Prayer Promote Spiritual Growth?

August 15, 2009

I agree with Ryle. Prayer promotes spiritual growth because more than any other spiritual practice, true prayers leads us to humility and humility opens the door to all the other graces. Prayer–true prayer, honest prayer–is my way of saying, “Lord, you are God and I am not.” We pray because we beleive that and we don’t prayer because we don’t believe that. And diligent private prayer, meaning those times when all by myself I call out to the Lord–develop in the heart a sense that without the Lord I am lost, sunk, done for, gone, and that without him all my efforts, all my plans, all my dreams, and all my busy doing, it all just amounts to nothing, nada, a big fat zero.

Personally I come back to Luke 18 again and again with its reminder that it is prayer that our Lord wants because prayer comes from faith and leads to faith and it is faith that our Lord seeks when he comes back to the earth. Things happen in me and around me and in the world because I pray that would not happen if I did not pray. And those things come because God in heaven loves it when his children call out to him
