In the Garden: Not the Gardener
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Sunday, April 8
“’Woman,’ he said, ‘why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?’ Thinking he was the gardener, she said, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him’” (John 20:15). Why didn’t Mary recognize the Lord? The text doesn’t say but several a...

Behind Closed Doors: Waiting
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Saturday, April 7
“Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment” (Luke 23:56).The four gospels do not tell us much about what happened on the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. We know that after Jesus died, the disciples stayed behind locked doors for fear of the Jewi...

A Good Friday Reflection
Posted by Brian Bill on Friday, April 6
The crowd below parted and I saw a man carrying a huge wood beam on his back. He walked slowly, and with great effort, as he struggled to keep his balance. Another man followed. He put his cross down, took out a whip and started beating his back. Bright red blood appeared on top of the lacerations he had from a previous whipping. I kept hoping he would stop because it looked so painful. But he didn’t.

Golgotha: Were You There?
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Friday, April 6
“They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull)” (Mark 15:22). It’s Friday morning, 9 A.M. Killing time in Jerusalem. Outside the Damascus Gate is a road and on the other side of the road is a flat area near the spot where the prophet Jeremiah is buried. Up above you can see a rocky outcropp...

“The Release of Barabbas” by George Tinworth
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Wednesday, April 20, 2011
In the 1870s a British artist named George Tinworth produced a terra cotta rendering of the moment when Pilate releases Barabbas and orders Jesus sent off to be crucified. The differences between Jesus and Barabbas are quite pronounced. Though it is hard to see it clearly in this picture, Tinworth inscribed the words “The World’s Choice...

Saturday Video: Were You There?
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Saturday, April 3, 2010
This beloved spiritual transports us back to the time of Christ’s death and burial. We are asked to relive those events as if we had been standing there watching Jesus die on the cross. This particular version is very appropriate for Holy Saturday because it ends with the verse that asks, “Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?&…

Friday Video: How Deep the Father’s Love For Us
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Friday, April 2, 2010
Since this is Good Friday, I wanted a song that focused on the cross. Among the many newer songs, “How Deep the Father’s Love” stands out for its emphasis on the true meaning of death of Christ. You can find a ton of good theology in just these four lines: “Why should I gain from His reward/I cannot give an answer/But this I...

Thursday Video: O Sacred Head Now Wounded
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Thursday, April 1, 2010
Fernando Ortega sings this beautiful version of “O Sacred Head Now Wounded,” a hymn attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux, taken from a poem that first appeared in the 14th century. The hymn comes from an English translation (of the original Latin) made in 1830 by James Alexander, a Presbyterian minister. His translation contains many more...
Wednesday Video: Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Wednesday, March 31, 2010
Philip Bliss, beloved gospel musician and good friend of D. L. Moody, wrote this great hymn shortly before his untimely death in 1876, in a train wreck near Ashtabula, Ohio. In his last public meeting Mr. Bliss conducted a service for 800 inmates at the Michigan State Prison. Many of them wept in true repentance as he sang the verses of “Hall…

Tuesday Video: And Can It Be?
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Tuesday, March 30, 2010
Today’s video features a congregation singing Charles Wesley’s famous hymn “And Can It Be.” I may be wrong in calling it famous because many Americans don’t know the hymn at all. A friend told me that it was mostly unknown in the US until after Billy Graham’s 1954 London Crusade at Harringay Arena. Cliff Barrows ...

Did Jesus Descend Into Hell?
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Saturday, March 22, 2008
The Apostles’ Creed contains the phrase, “He descended into hell.” This is widely taken to be the answer to the question, “Where did Jesus go between his death and resurrection?” Christians have debated the phrase, the question, and what happened to Jesus after his death and before his resurrection. Here are two sermo ...
Silent Saturday
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Saturday, March 22, 2008
The four gospels do not tell us much about what happened on the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. We know that after Jesus died, the disciples stayed behind locked doors for fear of the Jewish leaders (John 20:19). Their fear was well-founded because on that Saturday, the chief priests and the Pharisees met wi ...

I woke up this morning thinking about three friends. One recently lost his job, one may be on the verge of losing his job, and third one doesn’t like her job. Ed Mcollum on the Resurrection

Here are some thoughts on the resurrection of Jesus by my mentor in the ministry, Ed McCollum. I can still remember how he took at least five years to go through the book ...

Hell and Holy Week
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Monday, April 2, 2007
Last week the Pope made headlines when he said that hell is a real place. Addressing a parish gathering in a suburb of Rome, he said noted that hell “really exists and is eternal, even if nobody talks about it much any more.” He’s definitely right that we don’t talk about it very much, even in church. When was th ...

Begin to Weave and God Will Give the Thread
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Saturday, March 31, 2007
Years ago I ran across a German proverb that says, “Begin to weave and God will give the thread.” I always thought that was an extremely good way to look at life. Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith is the “evidence of things not seen.” Faith sees what others can’t and acts accordingly. Faith thus is not a feeling but ...

Do Atheists Make Good Church Members?
Posted by Ray Pritchard on Tuesday, March 28, 2006
A few days ago I blogged about Robert Jensen, the professor from the University of Texas who calls himself a “sort of” Christian even though he doesn’t believe in God or that Jesus was the son of God or that he rose from the dead. Even so, he recently joined St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas. I wondered ...

Chuck Colson has an important article in the current issue of Christianity Today called Soothing Ourselves to Death. How to Raise Up Godly Fathers

My friend Peter Odanga in Kenya is concerned about the rise of fatherless children in African society. “Dad is either too traditional, unfaithful to his marriage, abusing the child. We had an excellent conference at Camp Wonderland. Of my four messages, the sermon on doubt attracted the most feedback.
