Christmas in Two Words

How would you capture the essence of Christmas in just two words?
Two words.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
I started thinking about this morning and found it a helpful exercise–like trying to write a headline for the Bethlehem Daily Journal. And remember, headlines should be pithy, factual, memorable. Here are a few to get you started.
Light Shines.
Heaven Arrives.
Christ Comes.
Angels Sighted.
Darkness Defeated.
Jesus Born.
Herod Hoodwinked.
Welcome Messiah.
Prophets Foretold.
God Infleshed.
Unto Us.
Good News!
Great Joy!
God Here!
That took me about four minutes–and it greatly warmed my heart. Now it’s your turn. Help us think of some more two-word Christmas headlines.

| Just two words? How about simply: Merry Christmas! The words do capture the essence of Christmas if you think about it. Unfortunately, those two words have been muddled and commercialized. When was the last time we said a hearty “Merry Christmas” to someone? I’m guilty myself. I started saying “Merry Christmas” last week, but I now realize it didn’t really come from my heart. Saying “Merry Christmas” is one way we can share our Christian faith with others. For instance, we could say “Merry Christmas! Aren’t you glad Christ was born to save sinners!” |

![]() | These are all tremendous suggestions. I think there is something useful and even mind- and soul-stretching about trying to encompass huge truth like Christ’s birth in just two words. It focuses the mind on what matters most. I like “Glory uncorked.” That’s a nice image. You sort of smile when you read it. Someone on Facebook suggested “Shepherds Silenced.” That works. And so does “Shepherds Stunned.” Sometimes it’s fun to get truth in bite-size chunks. Thanks to all of you—and thanks to each of you—for your very creative contributions. Blessings—and Merry Christmas! Ray |
